Faculty: Public policy mediator and trainer Mary Dumas of Dumas & Associates and the Institute for Multitrack Diplomacy is respected throughout the nation for her expertise in public conversations.

Toolz for Tough Conversations is a conflict de-escalation and civil discourse training program that prepares individuals, organizations, and communities for cross-sector discussions, deliberations, and decision-making. Toolz works on the idea “that civility in our democracy, community, and workplaces is not about squelching assertiveness, protest, civil disobedience, or rigorous discussion of the issues.” Instead, the program teaches people how to use conflict de-escalation, diplomacy, and civil discourse to address challenges–whether they are at home, work, or in the community at large.

Participants will:

  • Identify physiological escalation patterns that can interfere with listening and learning.
  • Conduct conflict assessments to identify professional, interpersonal, and rights-based issues.
  • Apply learning to local organizational issues and identify pathways forward for improvement.

Continuing Education Credits: This program is pending approval from the Oregon State Bar and the National Association of Social Workers, and has been submitted to the HR Certification Institute for review.
